The five-star Grand Hotel Taipei has now opened its secret underground East and West tunnels for guided tours! These pre-booked, paid tours are conducted daily, allowing visitors to explore the hotel's normally restricted emergency escape routes.
The Yuan Yuan Restaurant, located to the right of the lobby, offers set meals featuring exquisite, authentic Jiang-Zhe cuisine and Northern-style dim sum. Signature dishes highlight the natural flavors of premium ingredients, with the handcrafted luxury red bean cake being a standout. This dessert, beloved by Madame Chiang Kai-shek, is a must-try for food lovers.
●East/West Tunnels These highly secretive emergency escape tunnels were completed in 1973 during the renovation of the Grand Hotel’s main building. Given the historical context of the hotel's establishment, many visitors were dignitaries and heads of state from friendly nations, making their safety a top priority.
●Secret Garden Exiting the winding underground tunnels, visitors will arrive at the former site of a Shinto shrine from the Japanese colonial era. This 112-meter-long garden features stunning seasonal flowers such as cherry blossoms, hydrangeas, and camellias. It also houses a popular art area, making it an ideal spot for wedding photography and intimate gatherings.
●Former Residence of Miss Kung Er (The Grand Hotel's First General Manager) Built alongside the main structure, this residence belonged to Miss Kung Ling-wei, known as “Miss Kung Er.” She was the daughter of Kung Hsiang-hsi and Soong Ai-ling, the eldest sister of Soong Mei-ling. The residence has preserved its original architecture and furnishings, and now also exhibits personal belongings of Miss Kung and important artifacts from the Grand Hotel’s history.
